Weekend Rugby, 09.08.14

Hawke’s Bay club rugby’s biggest match of the year was held on Saturday as Havelock North took on Taradale for the Maddison Trophy at McLean Park. Photographer Paul Taylor was there to catch all the action and see Havelock North take home the spoils. Earlier in the day Hawke’s Bay faced Waikato in a pre season ITM Cup match and photographer Duncan Brown snapped the Magpies stars as they beat the Mooloo men 39-22.

The Black Tie Casino Night, Ormlie Lodge

The Black Tie Casino Night was held at Ormlie Lodge near Taradale on Saturday. Photographer Paul Taylor was at the inaugural event, where all proceeds went to cystic fibrosis and benefit the 20-plus families in Hawke’s Bay who deal with the disorder.

Both semifinals were played in Hawke’s Bay’s Maddison Trophy premier club rugby competition on Saturday. Photographer Warren Buckland saw Taradale’s thrilling 18-14 win against Napier Old Boys Marist. Earlier in the day Hastings Boys’ High School drew 17-all with world champions Hamilton Boys’ High School in Hastings. East Coast Swim Championships

The East Coast Swim Chamionships were held at Napier Aquatic Centre in Onekawa, Napier, this weekend. The event is the largest competitive swimming event in Hawke's Bay and is hosted annually by the Napier Aquahawks Swimclub. It attracts swimmers and swim clubs from as far afield as Wellington and Auckland.

It may have been a bit chilly, but there were still a few people on the streets in their finest as DIY Deco, the winter model of Art Deco Weekend, happened upon the Napier CBD at the weekend. Hawke’s Bay Today photographer Warren Buckland was there to capture some of the scenes and events.

i-SPY a fun little challenge in Napier

It was a day of entertainment and dress-up in the winter sunshine — combined with a bit of mystery — for more than 170 teams who took part in Napier i-SITE’s first-ever i-SPY Fun Challenge yesterday. Teams of two to four were sent on a journey through Napier’s inner city and Marine Parade, following clues that ultimately led to a $2500 prize package of a family weekend in the city. F.A.W.C: Food fest dishes out winter warmth

It may have been winter but the warmth and glow left from the second annual Four Weekends of Winter F.A.W.C! has been a huge success. As Hawke’s Bay Tourism’s general manager Annie Dundas said, there was traditionally not a lot to do in June but the creation of the Bay’s mid-winter festival of fine food and wine had changed that and the visitors from the north and south joined the locals to experience some wonderful winter warmth — not to mention some great tastes.

Local schools and the public welcomed Matariki (Maori New Year) with games, performances and spectacular fireworks for the whole family at separate events on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Photographers Glenn Taylor and Duncan Brown were there.

1300 trees, shrubs and flaxes were planted along the Poukawa Stream, the outlet of the Pekapeka Wetlands, Pakipaki, in the early morning mist, an event organised by Hastings-Havelock North Forest and Bird, in partnership with the Hawke's Bay Regional Council.

The past weekend brought more excuses for the region’s foodies to indulge as the Winter F.A.W.C! series of food and wine events continued. Hawke's Bay Edible Fashion Awards

The 10th annual Hawke’s Bay Edible Fashion Awards attracted a large crowd and high calibre of designers from throughout the North Island. People packed the A&P Showgrounds Exhibition Hall for a 3D view of the colourful food or packaging creations, which took hours to design and assemble. This year’s entries followed a “Going Global” theme, with entertainment from Born To Move dancers providing the perfect interlude. Photographer Paul Taylor was there.
