Our photo competition winner:

Our photo competition winner:

A unanimous judges’ decision has decided the winner of the Hawke’s Bay Today summer photo competition. The winning photo was taken by Sarah Aiono of Poraiti of her 5-year-old daughter Mahala Aiono emerging through an Ocean Spa fountain with water cascading around her face. She wins a Fujifilm X-S1 camera, which retails for $899, courtesy of Harvey Norman, Hastings. Although the standard of photography entries was high this year, the combination of surreal water elements, natural landscape and eye-catching subject gave the photograph a winning wow factor. Mahala has been positioned in the centre of the frame, leading the viewer’s eye to her smiling face and the excitement she must have been feeling. Mrs Aiono said she took the photograph on an iPhone4 during an early morning family trip to the pools. She was ‘‘stunned to have won’’ and said her daughter would be very happy as the photograph was her favourite. We were amazed technology is so advanced it was almost impossible to tell the difference between a picture taken on a mid-range camera and a high-end cellphone. With excitement we look forward to next year’s photo competition and what even more advanced technology might bring.

Cadets airlifted in true military style

For 60 young Hawke's Bay and Gisborne military cadets getting to the 150th anniversary national camp being staged at Waiouru demanded a very special means of transport out of Napier. It was a very large bus - with wings. The air force put on a C130 Hercules to airlift the cadets, in true military style, to the Ohakea Air Base where they were taken by bus to Waiouru. The big four-engined transport aircraft touched down, for a brief and rare visit, just after 10.30am and took off about two hours later - its excited young cargo all safely aboard. 23 January, 2014.
