Herschell St in Napier took on a carnival atmosphere for the grand opening of the new MTG (Museum Theatre Gallery) on Saturday as thousands of people took advantage of an open day inside the $18 million redevelopment as well as enjoy the colour outside. Mud run cleans up as fundraiser

The weather was irrelevant for the 340 people who entered the second annual Hawke's Bay Mud Run yesterday. The Pukehamoamoa School fundraiser included bog-slogging, uphill muddles, slippery obstacles, a cascading mudslide, a slimy hay bale climb and a shingle hill scramble. The event was held on Rick Alexander's farm and Morton Estate's vineyard on Omapere Rd in Crownthorpe. Photographer Duncan Brown captured the fun.

Napier Technical won Hawke's Bay's most prestigious club rugby silverware, the Maddison Trophy, for the first time since 1992 with Saturday's 17-8 win against Napier Old Boys Marist in the final at Napier's McLean Park. Old foes clash for centenary

Centenary celebrations continued on Saturday for Hereworth School in Havelock North with a rugby match against long-time rivals Huntley. The schools first clashed in 1933. Two games were played involving the first and second XV from both schools. Hereworth has been celebrating 100 years of educating boys on the school's current site. Hastings Mayor Lawrence Yule declared the William Nelson Park officially open yesterday, with many locals and visitors alike coming along to enjoy the new facility. Independence Day revelry

Members of Flaxmere's Cook Island community joined together along with influential figures such as Hastings District councillors Henare O'Keefe and Jacoby Poulain as well as Detective Inspector Sam Abrahama, to celebrate Cook Island independence day and the opening of a hall extension. The Hawke's Bay premier club rugby semifinals were played over the weekend, as the four remaining teams battled for a chance to play in the finalfor the Maddison Trophy. Napier Technical Old Boys defeated Taradale Rugby and Sports Club, 23-12, at Whitmore Park in Napier, while Napier Old Boys Marist beat Havelock North Rugby Club, 21-16, at Anderson Park, Havelock North in the other semifinal. Weekend highlights in Hawke's Bay

The County Hotel in Napier held it's second Premier High Tea yesterday afternoon. The next high tea will be held on Sunday August 25. In other parts of town, the second of three winter concerts at the Trinity Methodist Church in Napier was held on Saturday where local entertainers put on a jazz show to chase away the winter blues. It was the second of three winter concerts at the church. The final would be held on August 25, featuring the touring Heidelberg Youth Chamber Orchestra from Germany. Parade remembers Korean fallen

To mark 60 years since the ceasefire that ended the Korean War, veterans and family members completed a Ceasefire Parade in Hastings. The war was a boon for farmers, with wool prices making many wealthy. But a high price was paid by the 45 New Zealanders who died in the conflict, with 33 seriously wounded. Big guns fire in weekend sports extravaganza

The final round of the North Island Moto Trial Champs was held in Hawke's Bay over the weekend. Seven time national champion Warren Laugesen, who is from Hawke's Bay, competed against the island's top riders who travelled to Puketapu for the event. Across town, Taradale played Hastings in ninth round of the Maddison Trophy at Elwood Park. Taradale took the game out 39-28 in the end. Hawke's Bay Today photographer Warren Buckland was there.

About 150 people turned out to protest against the GCSB spying bill in Napier on Saturday. The group held a rally at Memorial Square followed by a march along Emerson St to Marine Parade. The CXHB Cyclocross Series went to Chesterhope Park in Hastings yesterday. The third of five races in the series this year saw children of all ages ride through the dirt and mud tracks. Points were awarded for each race and accumulated over the five events with an East Coast Champion crowned at the completion of the final event, which holds double points. The Ngati Kahungunu Te Reo Awards toasting the revitalisation of te reo Maori within Ngati Kahunguna was held at the Hawke's Bay Opera House on Saturday night. The awards praised and recognised the efforts of educational sectors and groups, Maori and English medium teachers, business and community groups, language leaders, kaumatua, marae, rangatahi and Maori artists who have a direct impact on the revitalisation of te reo Maori. George Lowe was part of the team that made the first successful ascent of Mount Everest - and was the last surviving member when he died in March this year.
