The much-awaited Kids Capital Junior Bike Track along Marine Parade, Napier was officially opened yesterday. Parents took their children down to ride the track specifically built for kids learning to ride their bike.

Saturday's historic signing of the Maungaharuru Tangiti settlement with the Crown over grievances dating back to the mid 1800s had some stark contrasts to when the Crown arrived at Tangoio Marae to start the process almost 20 years ago.

Hawke's Bay petrolheads got a double treat at the weekend. Competitors in the Targa New Zealand Rally "The Ultimate Road Race'' from Auckland to Taupo arrived in Havelock North on Saturday and left yesterday. 1171 people and one dog registered for the Coast to Coast, walking and running the course, which followed the Rotary Pathways between Farndon Park in Clive and the Clifton Bay Café.

The F.A.W.C! Summer Series kicked off on Friday with a launch party at Craggy Range Winery and continued through the weekend with the first events, including a beach-front dinner with celebrity chef Annabel Langbein and a masterclass with celebrity chef Nici Wickes. About 100 people marched to the HB Regional Council offices to protest a lack of consultation over oil and gas exploration in Hawke's Bay, and managed to hand a letter over to the Minister of Energy and Resources Simon Bridges, asking for a moratorium on oil and gas exploration. Hawke's Bay is one part of New Zealand which gets very dry over the summer months, but in 2012/13 it is exceptionally dry. Hawke's Bay has clocked up six consecutive months of below-average rainfall to the end of February. Heretaunga Plains was the lowest, recording 25 per cent of normal rainfall.

Barry Gibb wowed the Mission Concert 2013 with a string of Bee Gees hits.

For this year's Mission Concert artist Barry Gibb, the moment was clearly enchanting and emotional. Three members of a powhiri group which put on a welcome and a cultural greeting for the Bee Gee in Hawke's Bay stepped forward and sang to him, delivering a beautiful rendition of "How Do You Mend A Broken Heart?", one of the many songs he and his brothers Robin and Maurice gave to the world. Mr Gibb stood and returned the greeting. "We love you and thank you all for your incredible love," he told the members of the welcoming party, which included students from Karamu High School who delighted their guests with their traditional actions and songs. Thousands of people enjoyed 2013 Waitangi Day celebrations at two events on February 6, which included the Waitangi Family Festival at Farndon Park in Clive and the Waitangi National Day held at the Hawke's Bay Regional Sports Park in Hastings.

Hawke's Bay Today is launching a new compact newspaper on 25 February. Management and invited guests celebrated the new format and unveiled the new masthead at a function at 1024 in Hastings on February 12.

Sir Paul Holmes has left his Hawke's Bay home in a moving ceremony, with a convoy of about seven cars now taking him to Auckland. Before the convoy left Mana Estate near Hastings, Sir Paul's brother Ken came out to speak to media with Millie and Reuben Holmes and Lady Deborah. They returned up driveway in a car and then came back down trailing the hearse with other family members. Family, friends and media descended on Hawke's Bay Airport this week to welcome Matisse Reid home after her six years in the US. Born with a rare disease and unable to eat, the youngster left her hometown of Napier in 2007 for the US, before undergoing a stomach, duodenum, pancreas and bowel transplant in 2010. This week the 12-year-old returned home to Napier to live. We trawled through our photo archives and found some gems dating back to when the brave youngster first made headlines in December 2005.

About 500 motorcycle riders took park in the annual Poker Run charity bike ride around Hawke's Bay on Saturday. The rally left from the Bluewater Hotel in Ahuriri before going on a scenic run through Central Hawke's Bay. The ride raised funds for Child Cancer in Hawke's Bay. Broadcasting legend Sir Paul Holmes died peacefully at his home in Hawke's Bay on Friday 1 February about 10 days after he was knighted for his services to broadcasting and the community. Compiled by Peter Fowler.

Napier was teeming with lycra-clad, wetsuit-wearing athletes from throughout the country and the Tasman who took on the gruelling fitness half-ironman Ironmaori challenge. The first woman across the line was New Zealander Natalie Gaskin, in the women's 30 to 34-years age group with a time of 4:53:32, the first male was fellow Kiwi Deano Gaskin in the 35 to 39-years, with a time of 4:16:01. Event founder Heather Skipworth said 2,100 athletes - 600 more than last year - competed in Saturday's event, but it was more than numbers that impressed her. "It always amazes me the stories of people being on the verge of diabetes and then training for Ironmaori and getting a check before the event and they are in the clear," she said. "It's more than an event, it's a life-changing event."

EIT fashion design students and their models sashayed down the runway showcasing a stunning selection of designs at Hawke's Bay Opera House last night. The evening is a traditional finale to the Certificate in Fashion Apparel students' year, and the fledgling designers lapped up the opportunity, to flaunt their fashion flair, pattern making prowess and tailoring talents, to a full house. Hundreds of walkers donned their running shoes and high-visibility vests along the Napier waterfront yesterday to take part in the fifth annual Mitre 10 Mega Walk. Organisers hope this year's fundraiser will have raised about $13,000 to go to CanTeen, which supports teenagers with cancer. Participants took part in four events that catered to all types of walkers, ranging from the 29km The Mega Walk, starting in Hastings, to the 3.5km Mega Meander, which started in Ahuriri.
