Hawke's Bay was shaken by a 7.5 magnitude earthquake near Hanmer Springs in the South Island. Although there were no reports of injury or major damage, Bay residents from Wairoa to Dannevirke reported a prolonged shake. People in coastal areas were evacuated to higher ground.
