Aspiring broadcast journalist, Catherine Cater, 16, fought off competition from a soon-to-be grandmother, a wannabe fashion designer and air hostess, and a singer to be crowned Miss Waimarama at Sunday's More FM Waimarama Beach Day.
Hawke's Bay Today is holding a charity auction of mounted prints by its four photographers to raise funds to build a home for Plunket. The auction is at 5.30pm on Tuesday, January 18 at the Hastings Community Arts Centre, Russell St, Hastings, and features 15 fabulous 45cm x 30cm canvas prints, mounted at no charge by Rembrandt Fine Arts of Napier. The prints are now on display at the Community Arts Centre.

A high 1.8m tide shifted a few picnics and wet a few towels but a perfect day was experienced at Waimarama on Monday. About 40 nippers had the perfect sized swell on which to learn to surf with the Waimarama Surf Club.
A day of tragedy and havoc on Hawke's Bay roads on December 27 left a teenager dead and 16 other people injured, including 12 in a highway crash south of Hastings. Shannon family 4-year-old Dontae Walker-Macdonald, mum Chelsea and stepdad Freedom were in the Honda featured in this photo gallery and survived. They say it was a miracle they got out alive. High winds lashed Hawke's Bay on Tuesday causing damage and destruction. Chief photographer Warren Buckland braved the gales to take these pictures.
MetService meteorologist Ross Marsden explains the spectacular sunset on Saturday night. The sunlight was red because it shone through a "much thicker slab of atmosphere", and the shorter wavelength light had been scattered, leaving only the red long wavelengths. Wind conditions and high moisture content at high altitude produced a type of "mountain wave cloud", necessary for such an occurrence.
Christmas celebrations were in full swing at the weekend with HBS Bank Christmas in the Park in Napier, on Saturday night. There was a lively atmosphere at Anderson Park, Greenmeadows, with children weaving through the crowds, prancing in front of the stage singing carols, watching fireworks and listening to music from headline act Nathan King and LT Funk. More than 25,000 people flocked to the park to get in the festive spirit.
Junior lifesavers on Marine Parade in Napier were evacuated yesterday when the pod of Orcas swam through their competition area. The Waugh family took these pictures of the Orca or killer whales as they are also known. Once Napier in-line skating ace Tom Scofield got airborne at Sk8 Zone on Marine Parade in Napier the Open Street Style Elite competition came down to who was going to come second. Defending the national title, he had the crowds gasping in awe at the New Zealand Roller Blading Championships last Saturday with a daring 1260-degree aerial spin, a remarkable three-and-a-half times around and around and around.
A sea of brightly coloured ukuleles of all shapes and sizes were raised in the air before the start of the world record attempt at the Hawke's Bay Opera House. Monday's annual North Island secondary school equestrian event run by Woodford House had a much smaller turnout than previous years with only four schools visiting from outside the region.
